The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team chase future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
