The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Tylenol Manufacturers Over Autism Spectrum Assertions

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, claiming the firms withheld potential risks that the pain reliever posed to children's cognitive development.

The lawsuit comes thirty days after Former President Trump promoted an unproven link between taking acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in children.

Paxton is suing J&J, which previously sold the medication, the exclusive pain medication approved for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he claimed they "misled consumers by gaining financially from discomfort and pushing pills without regard for the dangers."

The company states there is insufficient reliable data tying Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations lied for decades, intentionally threatening millions to increase profits," the attorney general, from the Republican party, declared.

The company said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the perpetuation of misinformation on the security of paracetamol and the potential impact that could have on the health of women and children in America."

On its website, the company also said it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a proven link between using acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations speaking for doctors and health professionals concur.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared acetaminophen - the key substance in Tylenol - is one of the few options for pregnant women to address pain and elevated temperature, which can present significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In multiple decades of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in gestation, not a single reputable study has definitively established that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation causes brain development issues in offspring," the association commented.

The court filing references current declarations from the previous government in asserting the medication is reportedly hazardous.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from public health officials when he told pregnant women to "struggle intensely" not to consume Tylenol when sick.

The FDA then published an announcement that physicians should consider limiting the usage of Tylenol, while also stating that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism in young ones has not been proven.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who oversees the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to conduct "comprehensive study program" that would determine the source of autism in a short period.

But authorities cautioned that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the outcome of a complex mix of inherited and environmental factors - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and condition that influences how persons perceive and interact with the environment, and is identified using physician assessments.

In his court filing, Paxton - who supports Trump who is seeking the Senate - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case seeks to make the corporations "destroy any marketing or advertising" that claims acetaminophen is reliable for expectant mothers.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the concerns of a group of mothers and fathers of children with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

A federal judge threw out the lawsuit, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
