The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
