The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the truth about the encounter was first explored the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
