Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
The international federation holds full authority of stadiums during games. While its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.
The Pacific Northwest is home to a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” the statement concluded.
