Sir Alastair's impressive 766 scored by an English batsman on an Ashes tour is only bettered by cricket legend Wally Hammond
Brisbane hasn't been a place that offers the Three Lions some much-needed hope for the Ashes
In the wake of losing to the Australian side during the opening match, the tourists have to bounce back ahead of visiting the famous Gabba, a stadium where victory has eluded England for decades
English cricketers have habitually been easy prey at this challenging venue
Among a recent history of dashed English dreams, dreams and bodies lies an inspirational story provided by an exceptional player
This marks the 15th anniversary of Alastair Cook mastered the Gabba via a landmark unbeaten 235, rescuing the opening match of 2010-11 establishing England's trajectory for their unique Ashes triumph down under over nearly four decades
It was the beginning of his successful Australian campaign; three hundreds and 766 runs
The legendary Hammond is the only Englishman who has made more runs throughout a campaign down under
England won 3-1, with every win by an innings
England hasn't achieved success at this venue since that memorable series
"People overlook the difficult moments, the nervousness and anxiety accompanying that success," the cricketer reflects
"I reflect proudly. I played a significant part in a tournament that saw England triumphed 3-1 in Australia with every match were won by an innings"
The path to down under success began 18 months earlier at the end of that year's Ashes on home soil
England won, the opener scored under 25 per innings achieving merely one performance exceeding half-century
He sought improvement
"Despite cricket's collective nature, personal performance creates the sensation that personal responsibility matters," he explains
Two days after the triumphant events, he returned facing countless deliveries in practice with Graham Gooch
The initial results proved positive
The batsman achieved three centuries during winter tours in South Africa and Bangladesh
After coming back to England for the 2010 summer, the left-hander performed poorly
Across eight appearances against Bangladesh and Pakistan, his best performance was 29
Without runs following the second day's play in the third match facing Pakistan at The Oval, Cook was convinced this would be his final Test performance prior to selection
"I was sitting in the bar, trying to find the answer through drinking," he admits
His century guaranteed his seat in the squad down under
Preparation continued with two victories and one draw in practice matches in Australia
When the first Test arrived at the Gabba, they faced Peter Siddle's hat-trick
Shortly prior to the end of the third day, both batsmen began England's second batting effort trailing by 221 runs
They achieved 19 without loss when play concluded and proceeded through a demonstration remembered in Ashes history
"I cannot recall specific guidance, our discussions," says Cook
Both left-handed batsmen added 188 for the first wicket
The 235 without dismissal represented the top score achieved by a Briton in Australia in eight decades
The English took advantage of an incredible start during the following Test in South Australia
After Anderson also dismissed Michael Clarke, the score read 2-3 and never recovered
He continued his Queensland achievement by scoring 148 during a memorable Test featuring Pietersen's destruction of the Australian attack
England could have retained the series in Western Australia, but Mitchell Johnson to preview the destruction he would cause four years later
The subsequent events included perhaps England's single greatest day in Ashes history on Australian soil
At the MCG, the massive stadium of Australian cricket, on the holiday, the Australian team were blown away for 98
"For ideal Boxing Days, this was it. There was disbelief when play concluded," recalls Cook
Fuelled by the focus to win the urn, Cook excelled once more at the Sydney Cricket Ground
His score of 189 helped England reach 644, their highest total in a Test in Australia
The question was not whether England would triumph the match and the Ashes, rather when
"The feeling was unbelievable," Cook remembers
"Following Tremlett's wicket of the final batsman to claim triumph, it was a moment of complete happiness"
He earned series honors
The remaining seven years of his cricket journey featured additional achievements
Following his international retirement, he received a knighthood for cricket contributions
