NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm this decision promptly after his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
