Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Claim Sentimental Triumph Against Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out through the stadium as Forest followers reveled in another result against Malmö. A great deal has occurred since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but the club continue to cherish those memories. Similarly, significant changes have taken place in the five weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and earning a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Third Consecutive Win

For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after ending sixth in their home competition – represented a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the momentum gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of the club's historic success in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any significant jeopardy or jitters.

It proved to be an event filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third clash between the sides since the European Cup final 46 years ago.

Forest leaned into the history, paying tribute to the legends of that era by giving them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also in attendance. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together before the match. Forest legends and company were given a rousing reception when they assembled on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a characteristically superb tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.

Remembering the Past

“30th May 1979, Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” read one part of a giant tifo, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the squads came out from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it stated. Another brilliant display showed Clough watching proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Start

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 advantage by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defense led by their own homegrown captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a opponent and into the pathway of Yates, who swept home right-footed from just inside the penalty area to score his first goal since last March.

Another Goal Confirms Control

The scorer was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his free header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward poised to convert the rebound from close range. McAtee, the midfielder given a seldom start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was turned wide off the back Colin Rösler, son of ex- Man City striker Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also earlier had a strong header smartly saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they struggled to match Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a corner. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from distance. It was one of those nights. The manager, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented multiple alterations from the side that stunned Liverpool at Anfield recently, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and further fresh legs during the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It proved a flawless evening for Forest. Dyche could take off Murillo with the match already boxed off and later brought on teenage defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop showed they are capable of producing of excitement, as well.
