Jude Bellingham Has to Drop the Immature behavior to Earn a Star Position Under Coach Tuchel.

If Jude Bellingham hopes to force his way back into England’s best squad, he would be wise to cut out the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that the substitute board was about to come up after an evening of mixed performance in Tirana was not good enough.

"I’d rather not blow it out of proportion but I hold to my words 'behaviour is key' and consideration for the players who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Decisions are made and you must accept them being a professional."

The midfielder must understand. There was no call for a strop. The captain had just put the Three Lions leading by two in an inconsequential match, with only six minutes remaining and Bellingham, after a below-par performance, was just shown a yellow for a foul on an opponent. This could scarcely be called a controversial substitution. Actually it would have been foolish for the manager to leave Bellingham on given that there was a chance he would rule himself out of the opening game of the World Cup by receiving a second caution.

Turning the Spotlight on Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s disappointment upon understanding that he was going to make way for another player. He flung his arms in the air and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand while heading to the touchline it was obvious that the manager was displeased.

This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He applauded Marcus Rashford for delivering the cross for the captain to nod home his second of the night, but everything else was harmful to his cause. It is not as if arguing was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has repeatedly emphasized honoring the team structure and the necessity of showing proper conduct.

Under Scrutiny

He, not included in last month’s squad, is being watched carefully upon his return to the team recently. Practically he has been on trial and he has not done himself any favours by reacting to his substitution as the side rounded off a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a tough opposition from their opponents.

Tactics and Formation

It means it's unclear on whether England function at their best when Bellingham plays. What we saw was not definitive. There was experimentation by the coach at the start. He has given the squad structure and clarity over the past few matches, employing a holding player, a No 8, an attacking midfielder and specialist wingers, but it felt different against Albania. Quansah was handed his international debut, Adam Wharton made his first start for England and the positioning of the defender as a part-time midfielder created a similar look to City's team that won three trophies.

A Game of Two Halves

Bellingham had ups and downs. He made a chance for his teammate after the break but at times seemed overly eager to shine. There were a lot of hurried and errant passes. A pointless clash with a rival player at the beginning. England were ragged during most of the second period. An opportunity for Albania came after he lost the ball cheaply. His caution came after he lost the ball to Broja and brought down the former Chelsea striker.

Squad Strength Shows

In the end the bench quality proved crucial. Tuchel threw on Foden, who appeared more comfortable to the spot that Bellingham had played during the first half, and Saka. Later Saka provided a set-piece for the captain to score the first goal. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks will be crucial at the World Cup.

Connection Remains

However, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was a little lost due to the fuss of the player change. When the match concluded, all eyes were on the midfielder. Tuchel walked up to his side and pushed Bellingham towards the English fans. Their connection is not damaged. Tuchel is not willing to discard Bellingham yet. Yet whether Tuchel is inclined to grant him a starring role is not guaranteed.
