Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
Summers commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward observing their progress".
The prominent academic, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
The newly public messages showed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the technology organization said it understood his determination to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization stated.
This announcement arrives after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will afterward move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his position on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week included multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.
The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to notable global figures.
After the emails were released with the public, the former official expressed he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild trust and repair connections with the people most important to me".
The professor served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was ceased to be associated with the organization.
Summers entered the directorate of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
