Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property near the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the property was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the blast had occurred on a level above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
