Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta played in English soil, an young representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he scored. The second time he took the field in England, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, indeed, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, also. “Actually,” he says, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is about to start; following that, the brief trip to the airport and another flight to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, partly because of the demands of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.
In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. The son of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he went through a ACL injury, being released, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All the minor details: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact 200,000 times. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. He left upset in 2020, aged 23, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually a vacancy arises for your role, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
