Contaminated Shrimp Issue: Indonesia Faces Pollution in Key Industrial Zone

An extensive manufacturing zone located in the suburbs of Jakarta is addressing radioactive contamination after a government taskforce found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants within the area, which includes companies that export chilled marine products.

The finding has led to immediate cleanup operations and the moving of nearby inhabitants, coming after a similar contamination alert in the United States that was linked to the Indonesian facilities.

Investigation and Detection of Contamination

Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp exported by a local firm.

Officials released an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, although the found amount was well under the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The authority stated: “The primary impact on health of concern following extended, repeated small amount exposure (for example through consumption of polluted food or water over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Medical Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The official taskforce did not identify the 21 additional production sites, but confirmed they would promptly undergo decontamination procedures conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official stated that people living in highly polluted areas would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical authorities additionally performed examinations on local employees and people living near the manufacturing zone, identifying 9 individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a hospital before being cleared to go back.
