At least 64 people died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 individuals were arrested.

Fierce clashes broke out when around 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, along with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
